Next generation guitar hero brings valuable lessons in modern rock to two-day, hands-on recording workshop

Fort Wayne, IN, March 7, 2022 – Sweetwater Studios has announced Recording Workshop with Jared James Nichols, the latest in its ongoing series of hands-on recording workshops that bring aspiring engineers and producers into its world class studio complex to learn alongside legendary artists and performers. The two-day workshop will give attendees the opportunity to learn the art of crafting raw, live, electric rock music alongside rising guitar hero Jared James Nichols and his power trio. The workshop will take place April 15-16 at Sweetwater Studios’ newly-refreshed Studio A and will be led by Sweetwater Studios’ Producer/Engineer Shawn Dealey [Counting Crows, Goo Goo Dolls, Bootsy Collins]. The cost of the event is $595 per person. For more information and to register, please click here.

Long live rock

Nichols and his trio will bring their energetic brand of blues-based hard rock to Studio A for a session focused on capturing the power and dynamics of a touring rock n’ roll band. Far from being a mere revival act, the seasoned trio will showcase the art of making live energy and chemistry translate on record. “People say to me ‘rock is dead’, ‘the guitar is dead’ all this stuff,” said Nichols. “For us it’s not about trying to be traditional or act as if we’re from a certain era – it’s about breathing fresh air into the music that we love. There’s still so much more left to say!”

The workshop will be split evenly between live tracking and mixing, giving attendees the opportunity to take part in the process of recording from start to finish. Day 1 will be focused on capturing the live performances of the musicians, with special attention paid to proper mic placement technique and signal chain selection for guitar sounds on Sweetwater Studios new Rupert Neve 5088 console. Day 2 shifts to mixing and post-production and the art of fine-tuning performances through mixing, EQing, and post-processing. “Jared is one of our favorite guitar players and has proven time and time again that you can still play with vitality, passion, and spirit,” said Dealey. “This workshop is perfect for the recording guitar player looking for the best ways to capture that grit and energy on a track.”

Meet the artist

Roaring out of Waukesha, Wisconsin, guitarist Jared James Nichols is one of the most exciting guitar players of the last decade. His energetic ‘pickless’ guitar style distills the best elements of fifty-plus years of blues-based hard rock and has made him a favorite of legends like Slash, Billy Gibbons, Zakk Wylde, and Leslie West. Nichols’s latest release Shadow Dancer is the most compelling distillation of these influences yet, and confirms his place as one of the leading lights in the next generation of rock n’ roll guitar gods

Meet the instructor

Producer/Engineer Shawn Dealey has decades of experience as both a recording engineer and live sound engineer for big-name artists like Counting Crows, Goo Goo Dolls, Avril Lavigne, Santana, All-American Rejects, Billy Talent, and more. Skilled at getting the best performances out of an artist on both the live stage and in the studio, he brings a warm, organic touch to all of his sessions and Recording Workshops.
