Areal SR1 spatial reference headphones

Immersive audio specialist Areal has launched SR1, a new spatial reference headphone system designed for accurate immersive monitoring beyond the post-production, mixing or broadcast studio environment.

The SR1 is a professional multi-driver headphone combining a quad-driver architecture in each earcup with Areal’s Acoustic Image Mapping (AIM™) technology. Surround information is physically distributed across dedicated drivers for front, rear, and height channels, preserving spatial separation in a controlled and consistent way. Unlike systems relying on binaural emulation or Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) personalization, SR1 presents a repeatable spatial image across users and sessions.

Processing for SR1 is handled by an 8-output companion controller with rotary level control and switches for instant toggling between stereo, 5.1 and 7.1.4 formats. The unit doubles as a high-specification headphone amplifier and incorporates a high-resolution 24-bit DAC. Connecting via USB-C to a Mac or PC, the controller appears as a class-compliant multichannel soundcard for integration with the user’s preferred software.

“By streamlining workflows and maximizing portability we want to free audio professionals to monitor, reference and create spatial content wherever they choose to work,” explained Areal co-founder Pieter Doms. “With SR1 and your laptop, your setup becomes self-contained. When you return to the studio, your mix is already structured and ready for refinement. This is also a fantastic tool for anyone seeking to develop their immersive mixing skills without the luxury of 24/7 studio access.”

SR1 is the culmination of more than five years of intensive development and is the second launch from Areal, following the unveiling of its Upmix Engine real-time professional upmixing hardware at the beginning of this year. Early SR1 systems are already in use with engineers, producers and artists engaged in immersive workflows, with further user stories and collaborations to be revealed in the coming months.

The SR1 system is distributed by POLAR in Great Britain, with additional partners to be announced throughout 2026 as the company expands its international footprint. SR1 is also available in selected territories via areal.world.
