This month's Spotlight is one of those rare tracks that sounds instantly recognizable even though we have never heard it before, and we say that with the utmost respect. The effort is simply so well written, arranged and executed that it seems inconceivable that it hasn't found its way to radio, film or television in some manner.
The old cliche about "serving the song" describes the music bed perfectly here. The lead vocal is presented front and center in the mix, while the rhythm section and guitars stay in a support role, allowing the listener to focus on the words without the distraction of guitar heroics or fancy fills.
We loved the artifact-free lead vocal recording and the laid-back harmonies, and the mix balance was equally impressive. While we have no information on the monitor speakers that were used on the project (though we would love to know!) it is obvious that Per took the time and care to ensure that his balances were spot on across all of the frequency spectrum.
We invite all of you loyal recordists out there to examine and try to learn from Per's work; it was stellar on every sound system that we listened to, from our laptop speakers to our KRK. monitors, as well as our Grado Labs headphones and the speakers in the old Honda Element! Well done, sir.
Summary: A Pro effort by all concerned.
