Recording: This month's Spotlight is a great example of size in a mix, something that a good many of you loyal readers have struggled with in your own submissions to us through the years. It is not uncommon for many recordists to confuse "size" in a mix with "volume". Also dangerously present in the size game: the urge to over-record parts, to a point where the sonic pie is sliced so thin that the track actually begins to sound smaller! What C.C. and the Cowboys have done here is quite the opposite. By keeping the sound sources to a minimum, each is allowed a huge amount of sonic space, and this quality-over-quantity method has reaped obvious rewards.
As for the tones themselves, we can't remember when we've heard a better rock guitar tone in our 14-plus years here at RECORDING. Magnificent. The bass guitar is round and low down and the drums are articulate but heavy at the same time. The lead vocal captures all of the swagger of the classic rock front man without overcompression or sibilance, and we love the group shout vocals at the intro.
Most importantly, the mix stays free of clutter and frequency masking while keeping it's energy in tact. Good on ya, boys!
