Recording: This month's SPOTLIGHT finds us firmly back in “one man band” territory. Everything about this track is rock solid, from the writing all the way through to the mastering. Each sound source is delivered free of clutter, no competing frequencies muddying things up, and yet the mix never loses its power. Dig the Bowie-esque lead vocal, right in your face, while completely free of any sibilance or other artifact.
J. Michael gave us lots of miking details. The drum kit was recorded as follows: snare with C414 above, SM57 below; toms and kick with Audix D6es, drum overheads were Audio-Technica AT4033s in an XY pattern, and the vocals via the E-V mic. All miking was direct to the PC over the MOTU 896HD interface. The bass and Strat were run through the PODxt Pro.
J. Michael also gets big points with us for relaying that his mixing reference material was Kings X and Nickelback. After years of encouraging our loyal followers to A/B their work against similar sounding commercial releases, it’s great to hear what the results can be!
Summary: A great solo effort!
