Genre: R&B and Soul |
PC with PreSonus Firebox interface running Steinberg Cubase SL (at the time—Geoff reports he’s now using Cubase 4) with strings and piano as virtual instruments provided by Steinberg, iZotope Ozone 3 mastering software, and FXpansion BFD drum library/plug-in; MXL 770 mic; M-Audio BX5 monitors; Carvin C750S acoustic guitar.
“Dissin’” is a female vocal modern R&B tune. Geoff wrote the music and programmed/played all of the instruments, while handling all of the recording chores as well. The lyrics were written by Bryan Keller, and the superb lead vocal was courtesy of Georgia Haege.
The arrangement is tight, the sounds (especially given their software based origins) are convincing, and the mix is well blended and balanced. Particularly impressive is the lead vocal. Georgia’s dynamic performance is captured and presented without sibilance or the nasty artifacts that we often hear in these parts. In a recording environment where compression/limiting faux pas are rampant, Geoff has managed to record a really fine vocalist with all of her dynamic range intact. Bravo!
Suggestions: None, other than you keep carrying on with what you do.
Summary: Here’s to you and your many hats, Geoff!
