Quote of the Day

“I tried overturning a garbage pail half full of water on a lackluster singer’s head. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. You know what his reaction was? [He cops a totally straight expression.] ‘What’d you do that for?’”- Joe Chiccarelli

AEA Announces Fix It In the Mic BLOG
6/22/2012
AEA is proud to announce a new bi-monthly webzine and blog titled Fix It In the Mic, to share ribbon microphone secrets and tricks that Wes Dooley and his crew have gathered for the past decades. Whether it is a hidden gem from the history of ribbon mics or session gossip about the latest chart-topping record, AEA gives engineers and musicians application specific insight into the depths of ribbon mic technology and how to use it effectively.

The focus of the features will be on microphone selection, placement, and techniques. AEA's mission is to help readers get the sound they envision right from the start instead of "fixing it in the mix" later on. A craft and art that often gets lost in the midst of the hype about the latest new toy. Thus, the phrase "fix it in the mic" was born.

Future episodes of the AEA webzine and blog will include high-profile user interviews, session reports, studio tricks, and ribbon mic technology insight. Whenever possible, high-definition video and audio will accompany the features to create high-quality content.

While the main focus of the content will be on AEA ribbon mics and preamps, other studio tools may be included in the features, which will further increase the educational value and hopefully helps engineers to improve their craft and to create compelling records. Short summaries of the features will be distributed via an e-mail webzine while the detailed content is published on the dedicated blog at www.fixitinthemic.com. Updates will be shared via social media platforms to allow user participation and increase reach. Readers are encouraged to comment and suggest ideas for future editions of Fix It In The Mic.

The first episode of the new webzine features the addition of an expansive set of upright bass recordings covering the full range of AEA products in the Listening Room section on AEA's main website. More than sixty sound samples of AEA and other manufacturers' microphones and preamps were recorded with the bassist Lyman Medeiros at the Greene Room Studio in Burbank, CA. For the purpose of comparing microphones and preamps Lyman was asked to play simple and easily repeatable musical phrases for three different style (swing walking bass, jazz funk riff, bowed classical).

Besides a wide range of ribbon microphones by AEA, Coles, and Royer, other standard studio microphones such as Neumann U47, KM84, Electro-Voice RE-20, and AKG C24 were included in the line-up of fourteen microphones. A comparison of AEA, Neve, and API preamps completes the set of recorded sound samples. This collection will continue to be expanded in the future allowing convenient evaluation and comparison of pro audio microphones and preamps, and will give engineers, producers and musicians the chance to pick the right tool for their application.

The audio files are embedded in the Listening Room section on AEA's main website for instant streaming, but the files may also be downloaded as high-resolution 96 kHz / 24 Bit Wave files for superior playback quality in the users' DAW environment.
