Quote of the Day

“There’s nothing like getting up in the morning and having your coffee and all of a sudden having this idea and being able to go into the next room and do it. Maybe I’ll work for another hour and do two more takes. Nine times out of ten, that first take is going to be the one that makes it on the record.”- Geoff Tate of Queensr˙che

— Be the First to get this Multi-Touch USB Foot Controller —

Berkeley, CA • August 11, 2010 — Keith McMillen Instruments, an innovator of creative technology for string instruments, today announced that they are accepting reservations for SoftStep, the first multi-touch USB Foot Controller. The First 100 SoftSteps will be available to select customers before the product hits the stores and they will receive a free Batt-O-Meter.

Whether used with an effects rack or popular software programs, this innovative device frees musicians from heavy footswitch pedals while expanding their control. Weighing in at just over a pound and fitting into many laptop cases, SoftStep has limitless flexibility compared to standard footswitches. Ten square sensor keys go beyond the simple on and off commands by supporting multiple transducers per key, providing five degrees of control freedom. Now each key can be used to manipulate effects, computer programs, and multimedia. SoftStep also has a four-direction navigation pedal, an alphanumeric LED display, and backlit keys. SoftStep connects to a computer through USB and contains Expansion and Expression ports. With the MIDI expansion module, SoftStep can be used without a computer (Mac or PC).

SoftStep features:

• Ten keys each with 5 degrees of freedom.
• Each sensor key controls up to 6 unique notes, CC’s or Program Changes
• Four character alphanumeric LED displays and 10 dual color key LEDs give feedback even in bright stage lights
• Weighs in at just over a pound. (Other devices with power supplies can weigh 20 pounds.) Futuristic blue green backlight makes each key stand out and easily identifiable
• Extremely rugged design made with polycarbonate and graphite composites
• USB powered-works with computer or standalone with MIDI Expander
• Connects to popular software applications including Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic, GarageBand, Cubase, Reason, Digital Performer and more.

Each of SoftStep’s ten keys has five degrees of motion that can be preprogrammed to control effects, software, or multimedia via USB. Once programmed, SoftStep can function disconnected from the computer for more freedom. Each key is laid out to be easily accessed by foot and can register movements such as up/down, left/right, inc/dec, pressure and rotary motions. SoftStep also boasts an expression pedal and expansion port, and offers optional MIDI in/out. A diamond shaped array of 4 Navigation buttons can access presets or serve as a volume pedal, scrub, or loop control. SoftStep easily accomplishes what usually requires a sophisticated hand operated control surface.
