Quote of the Day

“The technology is going to put [a lot of] big studios out of business. Let’s face it, in five years there will be no boards like this [gestures to his studio’s massive Neve console]; there’s going to be a Macintosh. There’s going to be great fidelity, and you’re just going to say, ‘Okay, let’s record.’ That’s it!”- Daryl “The Captain” Dragon

July 2014

Issue Image
July is Guitar Recording month at RECORDING! Guitar is the most popular recorded instrument among our readers, and we cover it often... but once in a while it's fun to put together a huge magazine full of guitar-centric reviews and technique articles, to cover the wide world of guitars in the studio.

This issue is packed full of great guitar gear reviews! We look at guitar recording interfaces for computer and iOS uses, Apogee's new JAM 96k and Fender's SLIDE. Fernando Curiel explores the boundaries of modern guitar technology with the Roland/Fender G-5, a Stratocaster that can model the sounds of other guitars and provide alternative tunings with the turn of a knob, and the Fishman Triple Play, a wireless MIDI solution for guitar that provides direct control of electronic instruments without permanently altering your guitar.

And there's lots more! We review effects boxes from Hotone and Maxon, check out AirTurn's cool Bluetooth controller pedals, and compare Universal Audio's latest UAD plug-in, the Chandler Limited GAV19T amp emulation, with the Chandler amp itself! And outside the guitar realm we have reviews of Focusrite's Red 1 500 mic preamp, the exquisite Prism Titan multichannel interface, signal processors from elysia, and Cerwin-Vega's latest desktop monitor system.

Guitar recording technique is a huge area of study, and this issue brings some excellent articles on diverse approaches to different stringed instruments in the studio. John McVey breaks down the recording of acoustic guitar from a producer/engineer's perspective, Michael Schulze weighs in with electric guitar tips and tricks, and Eleanor Goldfield discusses recording the bass guitar.

All this plus our usual columns, Readers' Tapes with Marty Peters, and more, make this an issue you won't want to miss. Tune up, turn on, and rock out with the July RECORDING!
