A mix as a performance with Daniel Lanois (video)
January 6, 2010
Wow. This video has just started circulating the interwebz and blew me away.
Daniel Lanois is not my all-time favorite producer, but a lot of his work falls into my list of all-time favorite productions. Some of his work isn't my "cruise down the road" or "rock out" cup of tea, but what he does is always amazing.
This is a video of him mixing a song on a really cool vintage Neve console. There's no automation, no plugin presets. Just a great mixer performing a great mix (fast becoming a lost art). It's also really cool to see him lean over on several occasions and tweak the delay/effects box in real time. You can really hear some of what it's doing at the end of the song when he adjusts the box and then quickly reaches over to fade out the return on the right side of the console.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. Happy New Year!

When the producer IS the extra member of the band....The hook of the tune sounds great, the performance sounds great and then you have the maestro doing what he's worth for...immaculate...Let me just hit play once more :)

It also helps immensely to have the talent of Trixie Whitley, daughter of the late (and GREAT) Chris Whitley singing; giving the track its unique identifiable attributes...
