Quote of the Day

“I finally figured out one day that most producers don’t have the faintest idea what they’re doing. They simply have the position because of circumstance, or they’ve wormed themselves into it, and it really doesn’t amount to anything!”- Leon Redbone

Web Apps and the Future of Music Production

May 26, 2009

The world of musical web apps is just starting to appear, largely in the form of pet projects by music lovers, but I expect to see more coming very soon. Could this be a glimpse into the future of music production?

To begin, I think we'll probably see a lot of web-based virtual instruments of varying types. This could be a really cool future, with lots of neat sounds and tools available as online applications. Later we might start to see more DAW-like tools, and Audio Tool is a good example of the possibilities.

To get started in the world of online virtual instruments, check out this step sequencer. And be prepared to waste a LOT of time. It's a blast.

I saw an online version of FruityLoops recently, and it was a fun diversion for a while. It's going to be a year or so more before we see a real shift towards web-based music production, I think. Quick question: You mentioned that we could email you if we had questions, etc. What address should I send to?

i remember reading that Thom Yorke of Radiohead prefers to make music on the computer than actual instruments. If someone as talented as him feels like that, then I can only say that IS the future of music production
