Here Comes The KMI QuNexus!

May 10, 2013

And just when I thought I was all done getting my hands on cool new gear to show around at the AES Nashville Recording Workshop & Expo (and review for future issues), a package arrived today with the new QuNexus keyboard from Keith McMillen Instruments:

The KMI QuNexus arrives for review

This is a very slickly designed little USB keyboard with lots of extras not found on the competition. Its keys and buttons are actually pressure-sensitive silicone pads that are very comfortable to the touch, and it transmits not only velocity but polyphonic pressure data (is there a sudden trend back that way? I love it!). It's very configurable, using a helper utility program I haven't tried yet, and even has input and output minijacks for pedals or CV/Gate controls... very hip! I'm looking forward to trying it out... stay tuned, and hopefully I'll see some of you in Nashville next week!

Isn't this keyboard the best? I just got mine a couple of weeks ago and I am obsessed with it! Obviously it takes a little getting used to with the pad style keys (though it reminds me somewhat of the korg nanokey series) but the QuNexus blows all other mini midis out of the water! The only complaint I have is that the pitch bend is next to useless, I think they felt obligated to include it because it's such a 'make or break' feature. I could have done without it at it's level of usability. Hope you're still rocking your QuNexus all these months later!
