Quote of the Day

“With any acoustic instrument that you record, you have some kind of ambience happening. Any electric instrument, when it’s direct, doesn’t have any ambience at all. So for me the challenge is not to try to simulate the acoustic sound, but to simulate some of the aspects of an acoustic sound.”- bassist Michael Manring

Ronan Chris Murphy Interview Highlights

December 9, 2011

Hello, Recording Fans,

I had a great interview with Ronan Chris Murphy on Tuesday night.

Here are some interesting quotes from the conversation, which will all be included in the March 2012 issue of Recording Magazine:

On influences:

“Neil Young is the reason I got into music; if I had to choose one style to produce, it would be singer/songwriters.”

On being a musician and how it helps his work as producer/engineer:

“I'm mainly a guitar player... I can't play violin, but I understand the instrument and some of the technical challenges and palate of options.”

On recording Terry Bozzio's drums:

“My goal was to see how few mics I could use; he had 16 toms, 4 bass drums and 40 cymbals; I probably used 13 channels total.”

 More soon!
